Taylor of all Trades Recommended Tool: Engrosser Ruler, Designed by Aquino de Silva
If you’re a calligrapher, letterer, or anyone in a field relating to alphabet studies, you’ve probably seen the flurry of activity surrounding the Engrosser and Spencerian Rulers designed by Aquino de Silva and available for purchase through John Neal Booksellers.
Ruler Review, Demo, and Calligraphy Ratios Explanation
These rulers have been masterfully engineered to make it easier for calligraphers to create guidelines that they can trust are in keeping with the technical standards of their respective scripts. The Engrosser Ruler provides guide notches for 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 mm x-heights as well as guides for 1:1:1, 2:1:2, and 3:2:3 ratios. In addition to that, the ruler has an angled side which provides a perfect 55 degree line for creating slant guides. If some or all of that seemed a little confusing, I’ve created a YouTube video which provides a review of the product, a tutorial on how to use it, AND a discussion of calligraphy ratios for those of you who, like me, might need just a little more clarification on what they mean and how they function as a technical element of calligraphy.
These rulers are such helpful tools for those studying Engrosser’s, Copperplate, and Spencerian calligraphy, and at just under $16 for the pair, they truly are a steal!
